Flau’jae Johnson’s mother, Kia Brooks expressed her support for Kailyn Gilbert’s decision to join the LSU women’s basketball program on Saturday. After another stellar performance including a game-winning layup against No. 16 Tennessee, Gilbert opened up about her choice to transfer to LSU, a move that has been beneficial for the junior guard and for the Tigers.
Brooks took to Instagram on Saturday to share her thoughts on Gilbert’s transfer to LSU. She emphasized the importance of joining a program that understood current trends in collegiate sport.
“Seriously, one of the best decisions she could’ve made for herself," Kia Brooks said. "Many college sports programs are out of touch with the current landscape and its rapid changes. If you don’t adapt quickly, you’ll miss out on huge opportunities.”
In her post-game comments, Gilbert spoke about her team and said:
“This is exactly why I came to LSU. I'm all about this, the big moments, all of this. I love LSU ”
Kailyn Gilbert opens up to Flau’jae Johnson about being underrated
Kailyn Gilbert, one of LSU’s basketball stars, sat down with teammate Flau’jae Johnson on Thursday on her podcast "Best of Both Worlds with Flau'jae" to discuss the challenges she’s faced throughout her basketball journey. In a candid conversation, Gilbert shared her struggles with being overlooked and undervalued as an athlete and how those experiences shaped her.
"My whole life has just been under-recruited, under-ranked," Gilbert said "A lot of college coaches didn't really pick up the phone, especially when I was in the portal. I'm real mad about that, so I kinda take that out on everybody."
Gilbert recounted how close she came to walking away from basketball altogether:
"It's been so many times I wanted to quit,” Gilbert said. “Even in the portal this year, I was like I might have to just step away from basketball, I don't know if this is for me anymore."
Gilbert has rediscovered her love for the game with LSU and has been averaging 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists this season. On Thursday, she made the game-winning layup against Tennessee which helped the Tigers' continue their unbeaten season and gave them their 18th win.
