Flau'jae Johnson played a key role in the championship game of the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship earlier today, leading the No. 7 LSU Tigers to an impressive 82-65 victory over the No. 20 NC State Wolfpack. The Tigers' No. 4 finished with 16 points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal, as the team scored its first victory over a ranked opponent this season.
The Wolfpack raced to a 7-2 lead within the first 100 seconds, before Flau'jae Johnson scored her first points of the game with a layup with 8:08 to go in the first quarter. Johnson kept them in the game, making a second-chance jumper with 7:06 to go and following up Mikaylah Williams' 3-pointer by ending a fast-break with a layup to bring the Tigers within one of the Wolfpack with 4:30 to go in the first quarter.
Johnson struggled in the second and third quarters of the game, scoring just two points across those two periods of play. She then scored five free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, before drawing a foul from Aziaha James while making a layup with 3:55 to go. She converted the subsequent free throw to complete a three-point play and extend the Tigers' lead to 19.
While Johnson failed to score a 3-pointer, she went 5-for-7 from the field and was perfect from the free throw line on the night.
Flau'jae Johnson plays second fiddle to Aneesah Morrow in big win
While Flau'jae Johnson continued her fine start to the season, the championship game belonged to her senior forward Aneesah Morrow. She recorded her sixth consecutive double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds. She also earned Pink Flamingo Championship MVP honors for her efforts, highlighting her importance to the team with yet another stellar performance.
Mikaylah Williams, the 2024 SEC Freshman of the Year, finished as the Tigers' top scorer with 24 points while also recording three rebounds, an assist and two steals. Shayeann Day-Wilson also impressed off the bench, finishing with seven points, seven rebounds and nine assists to cap off a terrific run for Kim Mulkey's side in the Bahamas.
The Tigers remained in seventh place in the Nov. 25 update of AP's Top 25 women's college basketball poll and should make moves in the next update following their success in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship. The Tigers, now 8-0, will enjoy a few days off before facing the NC Central Eagles at Baton Rouge on Dec. 1 at 3:00 p.m. ET.
