The iconic #22 Caitlin Clark adorned during her decorated college basketball career will be retired by Iowa. In an announcement made by the Hawkeyes, they uploaded a clip of Clark's iconic logo three against the Michigan Wolverines on February 15, which saw her break the all-time scoring record in NCAA women's basketball.
Following the clip, Clark's #22 was unfurled, before revealing her jersey would officially be hung in the rafters at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena on February 2, 2025.
Within minutes of the Hawkeyes announcing Clark's jersey retirement, some of her teammates and fans of the Hawkeyes flocked to social media to celebrate the talented guard. Among them was Gabbie Marshall, who enjoyed successful seasons alongside Clark as part of the Hawkeyes' backcourt.
Marshall initially posted a story and expressed her joy for her former teammate with emoticons, before summing up her feelings in the comments section of the Hawkeyes' announcement on Instagram.
"LFGGGGGGGG," wrote a seemingly overjoyed Marshall.
Besides Marshall, Clark's close friends and former teammates at Iowa, Jada Gyamfi and Monika Czinano, also reveled in the star guard's achievement, believing it is truly deserved.
"ABOUT TIME," wrote Czinano.
Gyamfi added,
"She must’ve been really good!"
Caitlin Clark and Gabbie Marshall shared a fruitful partnership at Iowa
Alongside Kate Martin, Caitlin Clark and Gabbie Marshall formed one of the strongest backcourt trios in the nation during their time at Iowa. They led the Hawkeyes to consecutive appearances in the national championship game, complementing each other with their varied skill sets.
Clark established herself as one of the best guards in NCAA history, averaging an astonishing 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game in college. While Marshall's averages of 6.6 ppg, 1.7 apg, 1.5 rpg and 1.4 spg may not be outstanding, her efforts in defense were an aspect that curried favor with Hawkeyes' fans.
While Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin declared for the WNBA after the 2023-24 season, Marshall chose not to follow them to pursue her Master's in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
However, Marshall is often in touch with her former teammates, recently visiting Iowa to meet Clark, Martin and some of her friends in a special 'Homecoming' dinner hosted by new Iowa head coach Jan Jensen's wife, Julie Fitzpatrick.
