Ex-Iowa Hawkeyes guard Gabbie Marshall was full of praise for former teammate Kylie Feuerbach following her incredible performance against the Northern Illinois Huskies in Iowa's season opener yesterday.

The redshirt senior was a prominent figure in the Hawkeyes' backcourt, having an excellent all-round display as the Hawkeyes kicked off a new era with a 91-73 victory over the Huskies in front of a near capacity crowd at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Feuerbach finished the game with 14 points, five assists, six steals and a team-high nine rebounds.

Her performance caught the eye of Marshall, who took to Instagram to share a story celebrating Feuerbach's impressive outing along with a kind message for her former teammate.

"You were amazing @kyliefeuerbach," wrote Marshall.

The Hawkeyes looked sharp against the Huskies, with Feuerbach being one of six players scoring in double figures. Villanova transfer Lucy Olsen enjoyed a dream debut with the Hawkeyes, finishing as the team's top scorer with 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds and a steal.

Four-star recruit Teagan Mallegni impressed off the bench, scoring 14 points and recording two rebounds, an assist and a block in 19 minutes of game time. Juniors Hannah Stuelke and Taylor McCabe also made their presences felt, finishing with 11 points each.

Why did Marshall leave Iowa?

Marshall formed one-third of one of the most feared backcourts in the nation alongside Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin during her college basketball career. While Clark emerged as a prolific scorer at Iowa, Marshall was an excellent defensive player, finishing her career sixth on the program's all-time list for steals (235).

While Clark and Martin declared for the WNBA draft, Marshall forewent the opportunity, retiring from college basketball instead. After completing her bachelor's in Health and Human Physiology, Marshall will pursue her master's in occupational therapy from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Head coach Lisa Bluder's retirement following the end of the 2023-24 season saw her longtime associate head coach Jan Jensen promoted to top job for this season. Jensen and the Hawkeyes will look to build on their win over the Huskies on Nov. 10, when they take on the Virginia Tech Hokies at Charlotte, North Carolina.
