Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese had her best night in the WNBA leading her team to a 79-71 win against the Washington Mystics on June 6. She tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals at the Capital One Arena in her hometown of Baltimore.
Her former LSU coach Kim Mulkey was also in attendance and they shared a moment after the game when Reese went to hug the controversial coach.
Reese gushed about her former coach attending her homecoming game in an Instagram story captioned:
"Her first WNBA game to the Barbie."
During the postgame conference, Angel Reese praised Kim Mulkey, highlighting their special bond.
“I’m just happy she loves me, supports me,” Reese said. “I want people to realize Kim Mulkey loves you off the court too. And she’ll support you no matter what. She’s like a mother to me, she calls me still, she checks in on me making sure I’m good. Checks on my family, calls my grandma."
“It’s a relationship a lot of people obviously fail to realize and don’t see, I love coach Mulkey. Go Tigers.”
Angel Reese and her contentious relationship with Kim Mulkey
Former LSU Tigers superstar Angel Reese and coach Kim Mulkey have always had a unique relationship. Reese had a stint with Maryland before Mulkey brought her to Baton Rogue in 2022 and the two then won a national championship together, which propelled Reese to national stardom.
Last year, Reese missed four games and Mulkey tip-toed around the reasons behind the superstar's absence leading to speculation that she had been suspended.
Mulkey hinted at the fact that there was an issue of discipline that she would not reveal.
A few weeks after the unexplained absence, Reese was seen dragging Mulkey away from a confrontation with the referees during a game against Northwestern. During the postgame news conference after the game against Northwestern, Reese compared her personality to the coach's.
"Me and Coach Mulkey have similar personalities, and we really like to win no matter the score," Reese said. "And of course, she’s going to fight for us, and we all fight for her, so that moment was fun, and we knew she had our back and we had her back."
Angel Reese has always been fiery and outspoken and with the attendance of her WNBA game, it seems as if her relationship with her former coach who shares the same traits is still as strong as it was in college.
