Former Purdue commit Kanon Catchings commits to Kevin Young’s BYU: Reports

BYU coach Kevin Young is bringing another top prospect to the Cougars' roster. Kanon Catchings, a four-star small forward, has signed with BYU, the school announced on Tuesday.

Catchings, a possible first-round selection in the 2025 NBA draft, committed to Purdue after his sophomore season in high school but opened up his commitment earlier this month, according to ESPN. The 6-foot-8 forward visited Provo and was coached at Overtime Elite by one of BYU’s assistant coaches, Tim Fanning.

Catchings averaged 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks while shooting 37% from 3-point range for the Cold Hearts. Other schools interested in him included NC State, Florida State and Butler.

"We are so excited to welcome Kanon to BYU," Kevin Young said in a statement. "He’s a great young man. Kanon’s a big-time talent who brings great size, shooting, and athleticism to Provo. He has basketball in his blood, and we are equally as excited to welcome his family.
"His defensive ability is as impressive as his offensive talent. We can’t wait to get Kanon on campus and get to work with our players and staff. We look forward to helping him develop and thrive in our program."

Why did Kanon Catchings opt for BYU?

Kanon Catchings spoke with ESPN's Jonathan Givony about his decision to join BYU:

“My family and I met with Coach Young and the coaching staff last week, and we immediately clicked. I knew right away this was the best fit for me.”

Another reason for Catchings to choose BYU was Kevin Young and his relationship with his players:

“Coach Young emphasizes building relationships, and I have complete trust in him,” Catchings said. “I’m excited to learn from him and improve as a player. We have a great group of guys on the roster, and we all share the same goal. I can’t wait to get started.”

This is a great signing for BYU, which will compete in the Big 12 next season. How far do you think Kanon Catchings help the Cougars go in the next season?
