UNC freshman Ian Jackson and the rest of the Tar Heels are enjoying a respectable 2-1 start to the 2024-2025 Atlantic Coast Conference. This comes right after they escaped with a narrow 74-73 win against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday.
Jackson, who is soaking in his first stint of college basketball, shined once again to the tune of 27 points, six rebounds, an assist and two stocks (steals plus blocks) against the Irish. He shot an efficient 11-of-18 from the field, as this is the lengthy guard's fourth straight 20-point game.
On Monday, the self-proclaimed "Captain Jack" was featured on his team's Instagram page with an edit that blends him with actor Johnny Depp, who is worth $150 million, per CelebrityNetWorth, and his "Jack Sparrow" character from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.
Safe to say, Jackson is in agreement with the reference, as he reposted it on his Instagram account shortly after.
Fans in the comments section have since flooded the post with their thoughts on how clever the video edit is, considering Jackson has been one of the leaders of UNC's scoring charge this year.
"W edit by the Tar Heel media team," one user commented.
"I love this edit," an Ian Jackson fan page wrote.
"10/10 edit!!!!!!!" another exclaimed.
"Edit is fire," one user said with fire emojis.
Others were in awe of the recent string of successful performances by the Bronx, New York, native, which could put him in the conversation for the best rookie of the campaign.
"Now that’s the freshman of the week," a UNC fan page shared.
"Aye aye Captain," one user posted.
"Give him the ball and everyone else rebound or get back on D," a user claimed.
Jackson's recent outings have helped his team uncork a 9-6 record as they set their sights on the SMU Mustangs, whom North Carolina will face on Tuesday.
UNC Tar Heels are led in scoring by four guards this year
Besides Ian Jackson, who is averaging 14.9 points per game, the Tar Heels have fielded a slew of spitfire guards to lead their season this year. Fifth-year standout RJ Davis, who recently surpassed Armando Bacot for second place in the program's all-time scoring record, is charging the team's scoring with a 17.7 scoring average this year.
Rounding out UNC's top two scorers are junior Seth Trimble and sophomore Elliot Cadeau, who are posting up 14.8 and 10.4 markers, respectively. With their dynamic play on the backcourt, the Tar Heels are adapting well to the modern style of positionless basketball.
