The UConn Huskies are coming off a narrow 72-70 loss to the USC Trojans on Dec. 21. The Geno Auriemma-coached squad entered the holiday break with a defeat but will have the chance to return to the win column Sunday against the Providence Friars.

A positive development for the Huskies is the potential return of veteran guard Azzi Fudd to the starting lineup. Fudd has been in and out of the lineup due to injuries, but Auriemma offered an encouraging update during the pre-game press conference.

Emily Adams of the Hartford Courant reported Geno Auriemma's update that the extra days of practice this week helped Azzi Fudd’s mental comfortability as she recovers from a knee sprain. Auriemma also noted that he plans to work her back into the starting lineup as soon as she is able to fully warm up

UConn WBB Weekly's Daniel Connolly later reported Auriemma's confirmation of Fudd’s return to the starting lineup, posting:

"Azzi Fudd will start tomorrow. She’s looking better after getting some time off during the break."

Fudd has played six games this season, averaging 8.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists while serving as a key complement to Paige Bueckers in the backcourt.

This marks Fudd’s return season after an ACL injury limited her to just two games last year. When she hasn’t started, sophomore Ashlynn Shade has typically stepped up in her place.

The fourth-year standout will look to make an impact against Providence and help the Huskies open the new year on a strong note. Sunday’s game tips off at 1:30 p.m. ET at UConn’s home court, where the Huskies will aim for their 11th win of the 2024-25 season.

Geno Auriemma says there's no point in not starting Azzi Fudd

During the press conference, Geno Auriemma discussed his desire for a consistent rotation as the new year provides an opportunity for a fresh start. He was clear about his intention to start Fudd to give her more reps.

"Yeah (she'll start). There's no point in having her come off the bench, you know, if you want to warm up. Then, let's get started and let's get out there," Auriemma shared. (5:50)

If Fudd has used the holiday break to fully recover physically and mentally, UConn fans could see her return to full strength against Providence.
