USC hands UConn Huskies their second loss of the season
The UConn Huskies could not pull off the victory at home against the USC Trojans on Saturday night. In the tight contest, No. 7 USC defeated No. 4 UConn 72-70.
The game was also dubbed the Paige Bueckers vs. JuJu Watkins matchup, with the star players delivering stellar performances. Connecticut's Bueckers dropped 22 points, three rebounds and two assists, while USC's Watkins had a game-high 25 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The loss drops the Huskies to 10-2 overall, while the Trojans improve to 11-1 on the season. Geno Auriemma's team started slow and fell behind 13 points at the break. They battled back in the second half taking the lead in both the third (20-13) and fourth quarters (21-17) but could not seal the comeback.
The Huskies faced two top-10 teams this season, including USC, but came up short on both occasions. Last week, they lost to then-No. 8 Notre Dame, 68-79.
They have a week off to regroup before their next game — a conference matchup against Providence at home on Dec. 29.
