Sakima Walker's struggles with injuries in her final season
Sakima Walker spent two years at Rutgers before transferring to Northwest Florida State College. She led the Raiders to a second-in-history NJCAA national championship and was named the 2023 NJCAA DI Player of the Year.
The Columbus, Ohio, native transferred to South Carolina with two years of eligibility and won the national championship last season. Her impact was more on the defensive end, as she worked alongside Kamilla Cardoso to help the team win the title with an undefeated season run.
In her final season, Sakima Walker is battling ankle injuries and has only played in eight of the 20 games. She played her best during the 90-49 win over the Texas A&M Aggies earlier this month. Walker finished with four points and one rebound.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley praised the center, pointing out her efforts on the floor.
"Kima’s fearless. Kima is a relentless defender. I know we don’t see her offensive skillset a whole lot, but she can score – she really can score. She needs more time. She needs more actual game time in order for her to do that.
"When you’re playing with so many great players who have years of service under us, it’s hard to break into that. But one of them’s out of the way now – it’s time for her to step up."
After the game with the Aggies, Walker missed two games before returning for the clash against No. 13 Oklahoma. She also missed the tip-off against conference rival No. 5 LSU.
