Fifth-year guard Haley Cavinder was Miami's leading scorer in their 74-56 defeat against the Louisville Cardinals earlier on Thursday. Despite her efforts, the Hurricanes were not able to pull off the win in their third Atlantic Coast Conference matchup of the 2024-2025 season, dropping to 1-2 thus far in the division.
Cavinder posted 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and a block in 33 minutes of action. The senior shot poorly from the field however, going 5-of-15 overall for a 33.3% field goal percentage and only making one out of her six three-point attempts. She was perfect from the free throw line though, draining all eight of her tries.
She was aggressive right when the game started, as she was corralling down rebounds and despite missing her first few shot attempts, she converted on a layup at the 5:29 mark of the first period. Cavinder would struggle to find a groove offensively for the rest of the quarter, though, as Miami would head into the second frame with a 23-14 deficit.
In the second period, Cavinder immediately put herself on the charity stripe and made both of her attempts there. She then quickly followed it up with a completed and-one play to pull the Hurricanes within seven, 28-21. Cavinder would rack up more assists and rebounds and even end the first half with two more freebies. But, it just wasn't enough as the Cardinals still led, 43-27.
Opening the second half, Cavinder made another successful and-one play. The 5'6 standout was then doing all she could to bring her team within striking distance of the game but Louisville's gap ballooned to as much as 27, 65-38. Closing out the third frame, Cavinder would sink in two more free throws.
Heading into the layover period, Miami was still facing a sizeable deficit as the game seemed like it had fallen out of their hands already. Cavinder would make her lone three-ball in the quarter but it just was not sufficient as the Cardinals beat down the Hurricanes with a score of 74-56.
Here's a closer look at Haley Cavinder's full stat line from Thursday's conference loss:
Haley Cavinder and Hurricanes look to bounce back from first loss of 2025
After coach Tricia Cullop nailed the best non-conference start by a first-year tactician in program history with a 10-1 record, Miami has seemingly lost its footing to open the Atlantic Coast Conference. Before the Louisville loss, they succumbed to the UNC Tar Heels and have fallen to an 11-3 overall record on the campaign.
This is Haley Cavinder's last year of college basketball, along with her twin sister Hanna, and she is currently averaging a remarkable 7.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 4.5 apg. Hopefully, Cavinder, Cullop and the rest of the Hurricanes can figure it all out as more conference games ensue.
