Senior Haley Cavinder had a solid outing in the Miami Hurricanes' 69-60 loss to the UNC Tar Heels on Sunday. Cavinder posted her second straight double-double, but it wasn’t enough as the fifth-year standout recorded her second loss in her second and final stint at Miami.
Playing all 40 minutes of the game, Cavinder finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and a steal. She shot sporadically, going 6-for-14, which included 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. She also shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
The 5-foot-6 guard was the best player for the Hurricanes in this contest, and it was clear from the tipoff when she hit a 3-pointer at the 8:07 mark of the first quarter.
Cavinder excelled on both ends. Her jumper with 39 seconds left in the first period cut her team's deficit to five, closing out the quarter, 19-14.
In the second quarter, Cavinder continued to be the focal point of the offense, grabbing rebounds to initiate Miami's plays and dishing out assists.
Her only made field goal came on a three-pointer at the 6:15 mark, but she also registered another assist. Despite her efforts, Miami still faced a 10-point gap, 39-29, at the half.
Cavinder struggled with turnovers and lapses to open the third quarter but picked up the pace after the official TV timeout.
The Gilbert, Arizona, native connected on a couple of jumpers and recorded an assist, while continuing to be a force on the glass. Even so, Miami's deficit ballooned to 15 by the start of the fourth quarter, 62-47.
With one last-ditch effort to give the Tar Heels a run for their lead, Cavinder grabbed as many rebounds as she could and contributed a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Despite holding the Tar Heels to just seven points in the period, Miami could not complete the comeback.

In her fifth and final year of college, Haley Cavinder is playing like a seasoned veteran. Her performance in Sunday's loss to UNC marked her fifth double-double of the season, with several other outings where she came close to achieving the feat.
While Miami remains unranked, Cavinder's outstanding play as she aims to close out her collegiate career strongly should not be overlooked. On the season, she is averaging 18.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 0.9 steals per game for the Miami Hurricanes.
