Notre Dame star Hannah Hidalgo had a succinct reaction to senior forward Liatu King's photo, taken as she reached for a basket mid-air, surrounded by defenders, in the Fighting Irish's game against the UConn Huskies. The image captures a fascinating juxtaposition — King making a shot in a pose similar to the ancient Greek sculpture "Laocoӧn and His Sons," who were defending against serpents.
In the top-10 battle, the No. 8-ranked Fighting Irish grabbed a 79-68 win over the No. 2-ranked Huskies on Thursday night at Purcell Pavilion.
An Instagram page that goes by "Art But Make It Sports" highlighted the visual parallel between King's in-game action and the sculpture. Hannah Hidalgo, who scored a game-high 29 points and hit six 3-pointers, reposted the side-by-side image on her Instagram story with a 4-word caption.
"That's art right there," she wrote adding a face-exhaling emoji.
Liatu King had an outstanding performance, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.
Hannah Hidalgo shares NBA stars' reaction to her performance
Hannah Hidalgo and Notre Dame are flying high this season with an 8-2 record. The New Jersey native has been a key contributor for the Fighting Irish, averaging 25.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Hidalgo posted a solid stat line of 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals in the win over Paige Bueckers' UConn Huskies. Her performance has not gone unnoticed, with several NBA stars taking to social media to praise her game.
"Hannah Hidalgo really one of them," Damian Lillard, an 8th-time NBA All-Star, wrote.
"Hannah Hidalgo & olivia miles nice !!" Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant said.
She proudly shared both of their reactions on her Instagram story.
Hidalgo reached her 1,000th career point on Sunday against the Syracuse Orange. She surpassed the mark in just her 44th game as a Notre Dame player, breaking the school record for fastest to 1,000 points.
"It’s truly a blessing to be able to reach that goal considering all of the guards like Arike [Ogunbowale], Skylar [Diggins-Smith], Jewell [Loyd] that have come through this program," Hidalgo said following the achievement. "I’m honored to have this accolade."
Hidalgo has proven to be a scoring machine for the Irish, whether it is knocking down 3s, attacking the rim or getting to the free-throw line.
