Notre Dame star Hannah Hidalgo is having the time of her career early in her sophomore season. She put up another dominant performance on Saturday, scoring 24 points and grabbing six rebounds in the No. 6 Fighting Irish’s 74-61 win over No. 3 USC, led by JuJu Watkins. Hidalgo almost had a double-double in the game, coming close to adding 10 assists to her stat line.
After the game, the 5-foot-6 point guard was excited to share her thoughts on the level of support that USC star Watkins received from big-name celebrities, including rapper Snoop Dogg and actor Michael B. Jordan, who attended the matchup at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
"I came into the game knowing that this was going to be a big game, Coach (Niele) Ivey preached it," Hannah Hidalgo said. "This whole week, they were going to bring in all the celebrities, all the fans that they needed. So, yeah, I saw them, but I'm not so focused on that. I'm focused on winning with my team." Snoop Dogg, a Southern California native, was seated courtside at the game, wearing a jacket with JuJu Watkins' name and number on it. "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis was also in attendance.
Former Stanford forward Cameron Brink, along with several other former players, including Cheryl Miller and Candace Parker, joined the star-studded stands.
"For LA being the center of women’s basketball universe this weekend is really special," USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "Look at this building, the sellout, the star power that’s here."
Hannah Hidalgo outshines JuJu Watkins in Notre Dame-USC clash
USC star JuJu Watkins has earned her fair share of attention for how dominant and impactful she has been on the court since she joined the Trojans last season. However, in the top-10 clash between Notre Dame and USC on Saturday, it was Hannah Hidalgo, a sophomore guard of the Fighting Irish, who stole the spotlight.
During the 74-61 victory for Notre Dame, Hidalgo finished with 24 points, eight assists, six rebounds and five steals. Watkins also scored 24, but many of her points came late in the game, and she had a tough time shooting early on. The USC guard made 10 of 25 field goals and went 0 of 5 from 3-point range.
"It’s kind of hard to take my eyes off of it," Watkins said postgame. "Just seeing how many mistakes we made in areas we can improve on."
With the win, Hannah Hidalgo and Notre Dame improved to 5-0 on the season. They will face No. 19 TCU, led by a rejuvenated Hailey Van Lith, on Friday in the Cayman Islands Classic.
