Two months into the 2024-25 season, Notre Dame Fighting Irish star Hannah Hidalgo is already setting new records. The guard has scored the most points in 12 games as a sophomore (310), surpassing Caitlin Clark, who scored 303 points in the same timeframe with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Coming third is Hidalgo's fellow sophomore, JuJu Watkins, who has scored 297 points for the USC Trojans. At fourth is former Arizona and Washington standout Aari McDonald with 290 points.
On Saturday, "HighlightHER" on Instagram posted about Hidalgo's recent achievement with the caption:
"Hannah has been putting up numbers this season 😤🔥."
After the Sweet 16 trip last season, Hidalgo is looking to lead the Fighting Irish on a deeper run. The guard is averaging 25.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.1 steals, as Notre Dame occupies the first spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 10-2 overall record.
While the Fighting Irish won big clashes against the USC Trojans and UConn Huskies, they failed to post victories over TCU and Utah.
Hannah Hidalgo earns big praises from NCAAB coaches
During Notre Dame's 79-68 win over the UConn Huskies on Dec. 12, Hannah Hidalgo scored big as she finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Her impressive presence on the court and her partnership with Olivia Miles left everyone, including the opponent coach, Geno Auriemma, in awe.
In a postgame presser, Auriemma praised Hidalgo, saying:
"There's a talent level that she has that's pretty unique. But I think more importantly is the way she attacks everything that she does. The way she attacks your defense, the way when she's on defense, she attacks your offense, and the way that she leads her team in so many different ways.
"I think you put all those three things together, and it's just a really, really, really difficult matchup for anybody. She does what she does, and I don't know that there's a lot of strategies that you can use."
Hannah Hidalgo, with JuJu Watkins and Paige Bueckers, are considered the faces of women's college basketball, with big predictions for the future. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley attested to this, saying:
"There are household names. Everybody knows JuJu. Everybody knows Hannah Hidalgo, MiLaysia Fulwiley. The future is incredibly bright."
Hidalgo and Notre Dame will return to action on Sunday against the Virginia Cavaliers, their first ACC home game of the season. The game is scheduled to tip off at noon ET and will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
