Hannah Hidalgo continues to etch her name in Notre Dame's history books. The sophomore notched up the 17th 25-point game of her career in the Fighting Irish's showdown against No. 4 Texas Longhorns Thursday evening, powering them to a convincing 80-70 victory in overtime.
Prior to the game, Hidalgo recorded her 16th career 25-point game against the then No. 17 TCU. Her 27-point effort went in vain as the Fighting Irish suffered a 76-68 defeat to the Horned Frogs.
This tied her for second in program career 25-point games with one of the team's greatest players in Jewell Loyd, who led the Fighting Irish to successive NCAA Tournament finals, in 2014 and 2015. This was before the Seattle Storm made her the top pick in the 2015 WNBA draft.
Last evening, Hannah Hidalgo moved ahead of Loyd in the list with her massive 30-point effort against the Longhorns, trailing only Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale. The 27-year-old leads the list with 25 career 25-point games during her time at the Fighting Irish.
Ogunbowale played a key role in the Fighting Irish's run to the national championship in 2018, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 rebounds in her junior season.
She finished her college basketball career averaging 17.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists and the Wings made her the fifth overall pick in the 2019 WNBA draft.
Hannah Hidalgo powers Notre Dame to second victory against a top-five opponent
The showdown between the Fighting Irish and the Longhorns saw two AP Preseason All-Americans go toe-to-toe at a sold-out Purcell Pavilion. Hannah Hidalgo and Maddie Booker showed exactly why they deserve that honor, playing key roles for their respective teams in yesterday's game.
Booker finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Longhorns. But she was outshone by Hidalgo, who recorded eight rebounds and four assists to go with her massive 30-point effort.
Hidalgo was backed up by Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron, who finished with 18 points each. Experienced forward Liatu King finished with an impressive double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to cap off a fine performance from Niele Ivey's side.
The Fighting Irish's victory over the Longhorns marks their second win over a top-five opponent, coming less than two weeks after they scored an impressive 74-61 win over No. 3 USC on the road.
The two-time national champions, who are now 6-2 this season, will travel to New York to face the Syracuse Orange in their next game on Dec. 8 at 12:00 PM ET.
