Hannah Hidalgo earns high praise from NBA Legend Dwyane Wade
Notre Dame’s standout sophomore guard has become one of the most electrifying players in women’s college basketball. After a stellar freshman season averaging 22.6 points, Hidalgo has solidified her status as a frontrunner for the 2025 Player of the Year award. Her high-energy performances on both ends of the court have caught the attention of fans, analysts, and even NBA legend Dwyane Wade.
Wade tuned in to watch No. 3-ranked Notre Dame’s matchup against No. 7-ranked UConn on Dec. 12. Despite entering the game as a self-proclaimed Paige Bueckers fan, Wade was impressed by Hidalgo's performance. Notre Dame secured a 79-68 victory over UConn, with Hidalgo putting on a show, tallying 29 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and eight assists.
“She’s like [5-foot-6] and she’s a dog,” Wade said. “Averages like seven rebounds a game type dog. And when we say dog in hoops, that means something. This is a hoop term. We’re talking in hoop terms. It’s just straight hooper’s dog.”
Wade’s words highlighted Hidalgo’s grit and determination. At just 5-foot-6, her ability to dominate games and consistently impact the scoreboard was recognized.
What makes Hidalgo even more special is her two-way impact. Whether she’s scoring in the paint, grabbing rebounds, or disrupting opponents with her defense, Hidalgo plays with a level of intensity that fuels Notre Dame’s dominance.
