Hannah Hidalgo shined once again for Notre Dame in the third-ranked Fighting Irish's first game after a short Christmas break. Notre Dame trounced the visiting Virginia Cavaliers 95-54 at the Purcell Pavilion on Sunday, and Hidalgo led the way with 28 points.
Hidalgo also had four rebounds and dished out three assists in her 32-minute performance, showing why she deserved a spot in the AP's Preseason All-American Team.
The Cavaliers (8-6, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, while Hidalgo missed her first three field-goal attempts, including a 3-point attempt.
However, that would be the biggest lead the Cavaliers would enjoy in the entire game, as she put the Fighting Irish (11-2, 2-0) on the scoreboard by making a jumper with 8:05 to go. Hidalgo then made her first 3-pointer74 seconds later, giving the Fighting Irish a two-point lead. Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron shine alongside Hannah Hidalgo in dominant win
Notre Dame's backcourt trio of Hannah Hidalgo, Sonia Citron and Olivia Miles led the team to a convincing win over Virginia with their own pieces of individual brilliance.
While Hidalgo was the Fighting Irish's top scorer, the spotlight arguably shone brightest on Miles. She became the first player in ACC history to record consecutive triple-doubles, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. Citron recorded a double-double of her own, finishing with 25 points, which included five three-pointers, and 11 rebounds along with four assists.
Notre Dame's victory was also a special one for Niele Ivey, as the former Notre Dame player recorded her 100th win as the program's coach.
Notre Dame, which is on a six-game winning streak, will enjoy a week's rest before visiting No. 17 North Carolina (12-2, 0-1), which visited Miami on Sunday, on Jan. 5.
