Hannah Hidalgo came up big in Notre Dame's win over UConn 79-68 in the Shamrock Classic at the Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Indiana on Thursday night. Hidalgo led the No. 8 Fighting Irish in giving the No. 2 Huskies their first loss of the season while improving to 8-2.

The 5-foot-6 guard finished two assists shy of a triple-double, producing 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals in an all-around performance for Notre Dame in its rivalry game against UConn.

Hidalgo was unstoppable in 39 minutes of action, making 8 of 17 shots, including 6 of 11 from 3-pointers, and was perfect in seven attempts from the foul line.

She bucked a slow start and her back-to-back 3-pointers sandwiched by a steal off Paige Bueckers in a 21-second span turned a 10-9 deficit to a 15-10 edge.

Hidalgo added 11 points in the second quarter on two triples, a layup and three free-throws, giving her 17 points at halftime. More importantly, Notre Dame increased its lead to 11 (39-28) at the halfway mark.

The guard would play the firewoman in the third quarter, knocking down two triples in the latter part of the quarter to hold off UConn's rally and help the team to a 56-52 lead approaching the final canto.

Hidalgo scored six more points in the fourth on a layup and four free throws, including the last two foul shots of the game that proved to be the icing on the cake for Notre Dame, who improved to 4-0 at home.

Fighting Irish vs Huskies Game Recap: Notre Dame holds off UConn to stay perfect at home

Notre Dame staved off a fiery third-quarter rally by UConn and produced a 79-68 upset on Thursday night at the Purcell Pavilion. Hannah Hidalgo sizzled for the Fighting Irish, tallying 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals, including two triples that gave some breathing room for the Niele Ivey-coached squad in the third period.

The Huskies were knocking at the door in the latter part of the quarter, cutting the Fighting Irish's lead to one but Hidalgo connected on two triples that handed them a four-point lead. She continued to play the fireman for Notre Dame in the fourth, making important shots that proved to be the final nail in UConn's coffin.

Olivia Miles and Liatu King added 16 points each for the Fighting Irish with the latter adding 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Notre Dame dominated almost all the statistical departments, winning the rebounds (38-30), assists (17-10), steals (10-8) and blocks (3-1). The Fighting Irish made 10 of 18 3-pointers as compared to UConn's 3 of 16. They also had more free throws at 11 of 14 while the Huskies made 3 of 5.
