Fans of UCF men's basketball are reeling from the Golden Knights' outing against No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday. However, freshman Mikey Williams recorded his first points of the season in the 99-48 loss to the Jayhawks.
Following the game, an image and video of the freshman, who was making his UCF debut, was shared on Instagram to congratulate him for scoring his first points for the program.
"MIKEY WILLIAMS FIRST COLLEGE BUCKET 🤯," the caption read.
However, fans were unimpressed with the post, with some questioning why he was made to play in the dying minutes of the game when UCF was already 50 points behind Kansas.
"He playing garbage minutes??" a fan asked.
"They 12 games in and he just scoring his first points. What's going on here," another fan commented.
"This guy is a perfect example of you can't believe all the hype. He always thought he was better than what he was," another fan commented.
"They really put bro in when they was down 50?? Thats foul," a fan wrote.
Williams entered the UCF men's basketball program as a five-star recruit. He is the first five-star who signed with the Knights since Michael Jordan's son, Marcus Jordan (2009-2012), and Tacko Fall (2015-2019). However, a foot injury made him unable to debut for UCF until Sunday's game against Kansas.
Why is Mikey Williams famous?
Combo guard Mikey Williams became an internet sensation at a young age. In seventh grade, Williams put up a massive 36-point performance in an AAU game against the North Coast Blue Chips. Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, played for the Blue Chips, and his father was there to watch his son's team get decimated by Williams.
Social media took notice of the youngster, especially after he joined Bronny on the Blue Chips. As a result, Williams earned over one million Instagram followers before starting high school. By the end of his freshman year in high school, he had two million followers, including celebrities like Drake and NBA players James and Kevin Durant.
Williams also signed NIL deals and became the first American high school player to multi-year endorsement deal with Puma at the age of 17. However, his deal was terminated following his arrest and subsequent felony gun charges.
Before his legal troubles, Williams had committed to the Memphis Tigers. But he never joined the team due to his legal troubles. On Jan. 12, 2024, he announced he was joining UCF for a fresh start to his collegiate career.
