Dan Hurley displayed unbridled joy during the first half of the UConn Huskies' 80-78 win over the Butler Bulldogs at XL Center on Tuesday night. He celebrated on the sideline with the fans and his players after witnessing a terrific sequence from his UConn players in the opening period.
Hurley was delighted to see some fire from his players after mentioning their lack of will and tenacity in the press conference following their loss to the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday. Tarris Reed Jr. got his coach fired up with 14:53 remaining in the opening half, wrestling the ball away from Butler's Pierre Brook II before banking the ball in to give UConn a 14-7 advantage.
Hurley loved Reed's hustle so much that he approached Aidan Mahaney at the scorer's table and gave him a slight headbutt to celebrate. He implored his players to bring that same intensity in the following possession, raising his hands up on the sideline as an example.
Alex Karaban heeded Hurley's request, blocking Patrick McCaffery's 3-point attempt with 14:33 left in the first half. That led to a fastbreak opportunity for the Huskies, with Solo Ball applying the finish to give UConn a 16-7 lead. Hurley screamed in delight, slamming his hands on the table following Ball's basket.
College basketball fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to Hurley's latest sideline antics. Some of them didn't like his actions.
