Cooper Flagg has been participating in the practice sessions as part of the USA Select Team as they take on Team USA. The incoming Duke freshman is the first college player to make the team since Marcus Smart and Doug McDermott.
As part of the social media run, Flagg was asked to name some Duke legends who also played for the USA Men's National team.
"Oh, that's a good question," Flagg said. "I wanna say JT (Jayson Tatum), Kyrie (Irving), Grant (Hill)."
As he struggled to give the last player, the staff gave him a clue that he was from the 2004 and 2008 Olympic teams. Flagg still couldn't, so they finally gave the answer: Carlos Boozer.
Cooper Flagg's mother, Kelly, quote-tweeted the video on X with a comment.
"He’s so stinking adorable🥰," she wrote.
Cooper Flagg impressed NBA players and fans online with his impressive skills from the practice sessions. His incredible talent is in part thanks to his mother, Kelly Bowman Flagg. She played for the University of Maine along with Donovan Clingan's mother, Stacey Porrini. They made an NCAA tournament appearance in 1995.
Cooper Flagg's mother, Kelly's one advice before he chose Duke
Growing up as a fan of Christian Laettner meant that Kelly Flagg was well aware of the notion of the "White villain" at Duke. When Cooper Flagg was in the process of choosing a school, Kelly had just one piece of advice for him.
“We definitely had that conversation with Cooper and explained the gravity of the situation,” she said (via The Washington Post). “If you choose this school, you’re about to be the greatest, hated White Duke villain.”
At the same time, she added that Flagg is not someone who can't handle a bit of hate.
“He’s always been fueled by negativity from the opposition. Every gym he went to his freshman year, he heard the ‘overrated’ chants. Then he would do something spectacular, and the chant would end abruptly. That’s just his personality. If you’re a basketball player, the color of your skin shouldn’t make a difference. If he can play, he can play.”
In his senior year at Montverde Academy, Cooper Flagg led his team to a 30-0 record, averaging 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.7 blocks and 1.6 steals. He was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
At Duke, he will be joining a rebuilt squad that is looking to avenge last year's Elite Eight loss.
