"He's such a weapon": Duke HC Jon Scheyer gives Isaiah Evans his flowers after UIW win

Duke coach Jon Scheyer was pleased with freshman Isaiah Evans' performance against Incarnate Word on Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Evans made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to help power the Blue Devils to a 72-46 win.

However, the lack of consistency in his game has been a talking point early on. He scored 18 points, including six 3-pointers, against Auburn on Wednesday but followed that up with zero points on a 0-for-2 shooting performance at Louisville on Sunday.

The talented prospect has not started a single game, as Jon Scheyer has opted to bring him off the bench. The coach was asked after the win against Incarnate Word how Evans has handled the ups and downs of his freshman campaign.

"I love just his work ethic has not changed one bit. His approach before the Auburn game was there, his approach after the Auburn game was there. I think it's a natural thing," Scheyer said (10:10 mark).
"To have a letdown at some time, and to bounce back tonight, I think he showed a lot of maturity, and the reality is his approach has stayed the same," he added. "Isaiah, just having him on the floor at times, even if he's not hitting, you know he has to be guarded because he's such a weapon."

Duke HC Jon Scheyer reflects on overall performance of his team

Duke did not get off to an ideal start against Incarnate Word, trailing 5-2 early on. Although they responded quickly, they had a hard time keeping the lead margin, with the Cardinals constantly hanging around. The score at the half was 28-21, Duke.

In the second half, Duke came out strong, going on an 11-0 run to stretch the lead to 18 points, and went on to win comfortably.

"Obviously, we didn't have our best stuff tonight, clearly in that first half," Scheyer said post game. "I love the way we came out that second half. I thought we were trying to make the right play, thought we were trying to be unselfish."
"I think it was great, and we have to use this week to get better, get refreshed, get our bodies back, get our minds back, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to do that with our guys."

Jon Scheyer and No. 4 Duke (8-2) will face George Mason at home next on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
