It was a sort of homecoming game for Azzi Fudd as the UConn Huskies played against the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday. Although she grew up in Arlington, Virginia, Fudd's mother, Katie, played for the Hoyas, along with NC State, and many of their family members are not based in the area.
Azzi Fudd had a strong night as she finished with 21 points and UConn coach Geno Auriemma commented on her performance post-game. He mentioned that despite playing her fourth year with the Huskies, this is the first time Fudd suited up against Georgetown. The guard has been dealing with back-to-back injuries since her freshman season and missed the games against the Hoyas.
"You know her mom would always buy a ton of tickets for this particular game," he said. "(It) didn't quite ever work out the way she wanted it to work out. I know she has a lot of fans down here. I know she has a lot of family down here. I could tell earlier on, she had a little bit of nervousness. But Azzi is Azzi, you know. She's fun to watch."
"You keep waiting for that moment, we haven't seen it this year -- when is that moment when three or four, five in a row are gonna go in. Little by little, I think she's getting back to her old self... and her mom was a pain in the ass to play against."
Azzi Fudd's mother recalls playing against the UConn Huskies
During her time with the Hoyas, Katie Fudd averaged 9.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals against UConn. However, Georgetown was always unsuccessful against the Huskies and was 5-0 during Katie's time.
"They were just strong at every position, Katie said in an interview with CT Insider. "They were formidable, they competed hard. "You couldn't focus your defense on one person because everybody could do things. They have five players on the floor who can score, multiple players who can handle the ball."
Katie Fudd also spoke about the incredible fan support Auriemma's Huskies enjoyed. She said that the usually empty arena was filled with fans during games against UConn.
This time, along with fans, more than 40 members of her family were also cheering Azzi Fudd and the Huskies. The guard is slowly gaining her footing on the court and has stepped up since UConn is without the services of Paige Bueckers, who is out with a knee sprain.
