Dawn Staley probably didn't know what to do when A'ja Wilson blocked rookie Kamilla Cardoso. It was in the middle of the game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Chicago Sky on Thursday. Staley had coached both players to the national title while they were at South Carolina.
Staley took the whole situation in stride, as evidenced by a video of her reacting to the situation live. Like a good motherly figure, she asked, in jest, for Wilson not to step into Cardoso's path.
She tweeted on X that the WNBA should thank her for the level of players she has built at South Carolina. What we didn't get immediately after the funny moment, was the players' reaction to her old coach's watching them. Aces Alysha Clark spoke about Wilson's response to the whole situation on the Hoffman Women's Sports Show:
"A’ja was just laughing. She was crying with laughter. Well, I mean, but that’s… that’s the point, right? A’ja literally did it to all the Gamecocks at that point. Like she got Alisha or Allisha. Sorry!
She got Z. Now, yeah, she got everybody, you know. I feel like, you know, when you’re in college and you have that initiation phase, I feel like it’s just her way of continuing the USC family tradition on a professional level.”
The Aces eventually won the game 95-83. As much rivalry as this season has shown, the civility among the players remains, and there is still room to remember their college years fondly.
A'ja Wilson continues to lead the Las Vegas Aces
A'ja Wilson led the Aces in scoring during the victory over the Chicago Sky. Wilson scored 31 points, with Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum contributing 21 and 22 points respectively. Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray led the Aces in assists, with five each.
Wilson is averaging 26.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game for the Aces. She is being trailed in her team by Jackie Young (18.9 ppg) and Kelsey Plum (17.3 ppg).
