Baylor coach Scott Drew spoke to Kansas State’s Jerome Tang after the Wildcats' struggles continued. The Wildcats endured their sixth consecutive loss on Wednesday, falling to Baylor 70-62, which dropped their record to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
After the game, Baylor coach Scott Drew took a moment to speak with Kansas State’s players, offering words of encouragement during a challenging time. When asked about his gesture during the postgame press conference, Drew explained his reasons for reaching out to Kansas State coach Jerome Tang and his Wildcats.
“I know what [Jerome Tang is] going through,” Drew said. “It’s never easy losing, especially when you pour your heart and soul into a team. I’ve been through the wars with him."
"In this profession, the highs are really good, but the lows are tough. I just wanted to make sure their team knew that there are a lot of games left to be played, and they’ve got the best coach leading them.”
Despite the losing streak, Kansas State has shown resilience, according to Scott Drew's assessment. Against Baylor, the Wildcats led at halftime and built a 12-point advantage in the second half before the Bears rallied to secure the win. Drew acknowledged Kansas State’s efforts and expressed confidence in their ability to turn things around.
“If you look at the last couple of games,” Drew said. “It’s been one or two possession games,” he said. “They could’ve beaten Texas Tech, they could’ve beaten TCU, and they had a great comeback against Kansas. Tonight, they controlled the game. It’s really just about getting on a roll.”
Kansas State still has 13 regular-season games remaining, providing plenty of opportunities to salvage the season. However, they’ll need to string together wins quickly to regain momentum.
Scott Drew praises Baylor’s resilience in comeback win over Kansas State
Baylor coach Scott Drew expressed pride and excitement following his Bear’s hard-fought victory over Kansas State on Wednesday. The Bears overcame a rocky start to secure a 70-62 win. After the game, Drew credited his players’ resilience, the energy of the crowd, and contributions from the entire bench for the turnaround.
“Really excited to win the game, really proud of our guys and how we came back,” Drew said after the game. “As far as our team goes, I’m really pleased with our seven guys that competed today. Everyone on the bench was outstanding, and it took all of that to win.”
The game didn’t start in Baylor’s favor. Struggling offensively in the first half, the team shot just 3-for-17 to open the game and was 5-for-29 at one point. Drew admitted he was questioning their preparation.
“I was wondering, ‘Should we stop doing shootaround because I don’t know if it’s helping,’” Drew joked, reflecting on the early shooting struggles.
Despite the slow start, Baylor’s persistence paid off in the second half. Drew credited the home crowd for providing a much-needed energy boost as the Bears clawed their way back into the game.
“I thought in the second half, the crowd really gave us a great lift,” Drew said. “And we were able to string some stops together.”
Scott Drew's gameplan for Baylor’s defense and determination ultimately made the difference, allowing the Bears to capitalize on key opportunities and swing momentum in their favor. The victory improved Baylor’s record to 12-6.
