South Carolina coach Dawn Staley is using her time in Paris to meet with her favorite athletes and legends of some sports. Staley has met Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez, Carl Lewis and Serena Williams, to name some.
At the same time, she has also been diligent in her support for Team USA athletes. Staley attended the gymnastics, swimming, 3x3 basketball and water polo games. She also met with athletes and gave them shout-outs on social media.
The latest to feature on her Instagram feed is Leo Neugebauer. Neugebauer is a German multi-event track and field athlete who won silver in a decathlon at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
"Ladies and gentlemen meet decathlon silver medalist - @leothegerman…..#hookedhim," Stayley captioned her picture with the Texas Longhorns alum.
Staley arrived in Paris as part of the Team USA's Presidential delegation.
Dawn Staley continues her role as the spokesperson for women's basketball even in Paris
Dawn Staley has also attended forums and participated in discussions regarding the upliftment of women's sports and its players. On Aug. 1, she attended 'Forbes and Know Your Value 50 over 50' summit. There, she discussed the rise in popularity and the growing viewership and attendance numbers of women's basketball in the U.S.A.
"Well, I think sometimes you need a unifier. I think Caitlin Clark has done a tremendous job at being that person people want to see," Staley said. "And it is the young, the old it is, she's brought the different set of eyeballs on our game. Now we're being talked about on talk radio, all the talk shows, all the podcasts."
"And now we're seeing not only Caitlin but all the rest of the talented young ladies that, we didn't dare to cover for one reason or another. But now, it's a popular thing to talk about women's basketball and it's a great thing. I'm so happy that I'm alive and well to witness and to be a part of it."
Staley had earlier admitted that the selection committee made a mistake in excluding Indiana guard Caitlin Clark from the Team USA roster. As a committee member, she said they would have included Clark had they got another chance.
Capitalizing on the growing attention, the WNBA has signed a new 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC. This will earn the league around $200 million a year. With this increase in funding, fans hope that the athletes will receive better pay, which has been extremely low for several years.
