In his 47 years of coaching, Mike Krzyzewski, or Coach K, as he is popularly known, revived the passion and attention of USA basketball with his incredible coaching. After the 2004 Athens Olympics, when Team USA only won bronze, Coach Krzyzewski was tasked with putting together and leading the Redeem Team, who would win back the respect for the USA as a basketball country.
How many Olympic gold medals has Coach K won?
Mike Krzyzewski won three Olympic gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. The push to hire Krzyzewski came after Team USA scrapped by to win a bronze in Athens.
After the Athens result, it was claimed the national basketball team lost respect on an international scale despite being the birthplace of the game. The road to winning a gold in Beijing was not easy as the team led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Chris Bosch and Carmelo Anthony failed to clear their name at the 2006 World Championships when they again settled for bronze.
Kobe Bryant was added as an important piece and the "Redeem Team" was formed. They were on a mission to earn back USA's title as the basketball capital of the world. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Mike Krzyzewski and his team maintained a perfect 8-0 record.
The most iconic moment from that year was in the finals when Kobe Bryant ran into his Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Pau Gasol, to show that right there, the Spaniard was an opponent, not his friend. Team USA won the game 118-107. That year, Krzyzewski drew rave reviews from the players for his efforts.
“I wanted to go to Duke. I wanted to play for Coach K," Kobe said. "It has been awesome. He is very intellectual and cerebral when it comes to the game. I love his passion. He loves the game, he enjoys being around his players and he enjoys teaching. He is open to hearing suggestions and listening. It works. Coach K is one of the best coaches of all-time. Period. No question about it.”
After the success of the Beijing Games, Mike Krzyzewski returned for the 2012 Olympics in London and once again maintained a perfect 8-0 record. After this, he announced his intention to retire from national coaching but returned for another Olympics round in Rio 2016, where Team USA won gold once again.
Apart from the Olympics, Mike Krzyzewski has also worked with FIBA World Cup teams.
