LSU guard Kailyn Gilbert surprised Flau'jae Johnson when she shared her first impression of the junior on the Best of Both Worlds podcast. On Thursday's episode, Gilbert and her teammate discussed their basketball journeys, their experiences with the transfer portal, and first impressions, among other things.
"The first impression of you, I thought you was loud," Gilbert said. "I don’t like loud people, so I'm like, she loud bruh. She just be blah blah blah. But once I got to know you, like, you still loud but you quiet when you like, doing your stuff, you quiet."
Johnson agreed with Gilbert’s observation about her outspoken personality.
"I am loud. I am a yapper," Johnson said. "I feel like that's kind of why we get along 'cause I like to yap and you like to listen. I don't even think you'll be listening to me half of the time, but you be acting like you listening. You low-key a yapper too when we get to be, me and KG, we be having these deep conversations and we just get to rolling."
Johnson added that when she attempts to stay quiet, people typically think she's upset. When Gilbert agreed, Johnson clarified that her silence usually means she's just trying to stay calm and centered.
Kailyn Gilbert shares her experience playing for Kim Mulkey at LSU
After two years playing for the Arizona Wildcats, Kailyn Gilbert transferred to the LSU Tigers for the 2024-25 season. When asked about her experience playing for Kim Mulkey and the Tigers on Johnson's podcast, Gilbert said (26:24):
"Well, here at LSU, (Kim) Mulkey treats us like pros. She's going to expect you to handle your business and when you get on the court, she want all of you and that's something that I felt like I really wasn't getting at my old school.
"Mulkey pushes me like nobody else has ever pushed me. Sometimes I'm like, 'Dang, I'm not sure if I can keep going further,' and just Mulkey just keeps demanding more out of me. Mulkey's a pro coach."
After her breakout season as a sophomore, Kailyn Gilbert's production has gone down as a junior. She is now averaging 11.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals.
The Tigers extended their undefeated run to 19-0 after the 83-77 win over Vanderbilt on Monday. They will next suit up on Saturday against the Florida Gators. They occupy the top spot in the SEC standings and are at No. 5 overall.
