Although his team won their second straight conference game on Tuesday, UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley seemingly stole the show for his antics. The back-to-back defending national champions won the tightly contested affair, 80-78.
However, the most talked about part from the game was the $20 million worth (per Celebrity Net Worth) Hurley telling a referee:
"Don't turn your back on me. I'm the best coach in the f***ing sport."
On Thursday, Dan Hurley joined the 247Sports College Basketball Show where he was asked about the incident and the internet's reaction to it.
"Super soft media people that want to cancel me for being an intense coach. I don't think we need to make sports softer. So, yeah, go for it," Hurley said. (0:45)
Hurley has always been known for his eccentric behavior, especially during intense fixtures, which makes his reaction to the referee not a surprise to many. As they aim for a historic national title three-peat this season, Hurley and the Huskies are currently 6-2 in conference play with a 14-5 overall record.
Seeking more momentum ahead, the Huskies will travel to the Xavier Musketeers' home for the tip-off on Saturday.
Dan Hurley reveals the only embarrassing part of his behavior
In the interview, however, Dan Hurley admitted the only thing that he felt ashamed about lashing out at a referee like he did. While he had no regrets about doing it, he does feel a bit of embarrassment about facing other coaches after making such a claim.
"The embarrassment part of getting caught on camera talking about my resume as a coach, the only embarrassment I feel about that would be towards my fellow coaches. When I coach against Sean Miller this weekend, I'm gonna be embarrassed like what I said to an official, putting myself up on that pedestal," Hurley said.
"That's the only place I'm gonna feel embarrassed is when I see coach (Tom) Izzo and Bill Self, saying something egotistical like that relative to all the amazing coaches that are just as good or better than me as a coach," he added.
With all the fire and hyped-up intensity Hurley has shown as of late, this is a refreshing instance where he is showing that he is still humble as a tactician. If he and the Huskies do pull off the one-of-a-kind national championship three-peat come March, then his confidence will surely skyrocket further.
