USC Trojans coach Eric Musselman was clearly frustrated by a few things during Wednesday's 69-82 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers, led by Mike Woodson. After the final buzzer, the two coaches found themselves in a tense confrontation during the post-game handshake line.
Musselman reportedly made no attempt to acknowledge Woodson and instead simply walked by the Indiana coach. When asked about the incident in his press conference after the game, Musselman had a short, sharp response.
"I got no comment on that guy," he said (5:57), alluding to his displeasure with Woodson during the game.
The entire context behind Musselman's frustrations with the Indiana coach is yet to be revealed. However, the USC coach showed his frustration throughout the matchup — at one point even dropping to his knees on the sideline after a Hoosiers' offensive rebound. He also made no secret of his disagreement with some of the decisions from the officiating crew and he let his feelings be known.
The defeat at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall dropped USC's record to 9-6 on the season, marking their second consecutive loss. Musselman was also not pleased with his team's overall performance. They lost to Michigan at home on Jan. 4.
"We want to win games, obviously," Musselman said. "I’m pretty sure that anyone who watches us will say that we compete when we go through some offensive dry spells that have hurt us. … I realize my job is to win basketball games and to get our guys to compete."
Eric Musselman shares his experience as a first-year coach in Big Ten
In his first year as the USC coach, Eric Musselman has already faced his fair share of challenges. The veteran coach, who has extensive experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, understands the steep learning curve that comes with taking over a new program.
After the Indiana loss, Eric Musselman was asked in the post-game presser about how he feels his team has responded to the rigors of Big Ten play so far.
"I've coached in the NBA and the SEC, so if you think this league's good, so is the SEC," he said (2:17). "I mean, I think we have a lot of players that have transferred up from mid-major schools, so they're going through some stuff."
"It's just my job to try to develop a player, so there's going to be a lot of learning curves. But I think with my background of coaching at the pro level, it is important for us in year one to develop one of our younger guys. That's what we're trying to do with [Wesley Yates]."
Eric Musselman's men will face another tough test on Saturday when they play No. 13 Illinois on the road.
