LSU coach Kim Mulkey has added a humorous twist to her expectations from the No. 6 Tigers' Thursday night game at No. 16 Tennessee. While previewing the showdown, Mulkey commended Lady Volunteers coach Kim Caldwell's contributions to the program's increasing popularity.
With that, the four-time NCAA championship-winning coach proposed a unique idea to make the game memorable. Mulkey suggested that Caldwell should have her baby during the game, adding that she would hold her hand with Caldwell's husband in the delivery room. Mulkey also noted how Pat Summitt famously gave birth to her son, Tyler, during a recruiting trip.
"She's any moment now, I was told, should have a baby," Mulkey said. "So, I hope she has it right there in the middle of the game. I mean, I hope that game gets so exciting I'll go down there and help deliver it.
"Pat Summit had quite a story when she had her baby. She had to land that plane out of recruiting (Michelle) Marciniak, and so if Kim goes into labor during our game, listen I have lots of experience, I have two, so come find me and I'll be there and hold your hand with your husband and whoever else you'll let in the room."
Whether or not Kim Caldwell's baby arrives during the game, the contest should be entertaining. LSU (17-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) and Tennessee (13-1, 1-1) are among the bests teams in the nation. The Tigers enter the contest after a 73-63 win over Auburn while the Lady Vols are coming off an 87-86 loss to the Sooners.
NCAA analyst hails Notre Dame above Kim Mulkey's LSU's perfect record
The LSU Tigers have started the season undefeated. However, ESPN analyst Elle Duncan believes No. 3 Notre Dame (12-2) has a higher ceiling at the current point of the season due to LSU's easy scheduling.
"Well, they're undefeated but they haven't played literally anyone," she said on "The Elle Duncan Show" (Timestamp: 9:46).
"And Kim Mulkey tends to do that. She likes to backload her team. She likes to sort of figure out who her team is and give them a really soft schedule. They haven't played anybody. Notre Dame played a lot of people. Their measuring stick is high. They, I think, are legit."
Notre Dame has won four of its five games against ranked opponents. The Fighting Irish have wins over the then-No. 2 UConn Huskies and the then-No. 20 USC Trojans.
On the other hand, Kim Caldwell's Lady Volunteers are only the second ranked team Kim Mulkey's squad will have faced. The Tigers defeated the then-No. 20 NC State on Nov. 27 in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo championship game.
However, LSU's schedule is set to get plenty of tests.
The Tigers have seven games against teams that are currently ranked in its SEC slate, and six of those are on the road: two games with Tennessee, at No. 2 South Carolina, No. 10 Oklahoma, at No. 5 Texas, at No. 15 Kentucky and at No. 18 Alabama.
Notre Dame has four teams that are currently ranked on its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule: No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 24 California, No. 14 Duke and at No. 21 NC State. Only one of those is on the road.
