LSU star Flau'Jae Johnson shared a short but sweet message to honor her father Jason Johnson's memory on Instagram. Jason, a former rapper popularly known as Camouflauge, died in 2003, six months before his daughter was born.
Sharing a throwback picture of him, Flau'Jae posted a post-humous birthday message to her dad.
"Happy Heavenly Birthday Pops I Hope You’re Proud 😓❤️," she wrote.
Camouflauge was born on Dec. 9, 1981, in Savannah, Georgia. He began his music career in 1991 and subsequently became known for his songs, "Cut Friends" and "Laying My Stunt Down." His final album, "Keepin it Real" was released in 2002.
Camouflauge was shot dead outside of the Pure Pain Records recording studio while he was walking his son. He was 21 years old.
Flau'Jae Johnson inspired by her father Camouflauge to become a rapper
Flau'Jae Johnson is a talented basketball player who doubles as an up-and-coming rapper. Her music career started on a flying note as she was named the BET Amplified Artist of the Month for October.
In a video posted by BET on Instagram, Johnson said she was inspired by her late dad to become a rapper.
"What inspired me to start rapping was my father," she said. "He was a good rapper, he had a record deal and everything. Once I found that out, I was like, 'Mom, I want to be a rap star too.'
"I'm just speaking what I feel into the mic and it's resonating with so many other people."
Johnson, who is one of the best basketball players in college women's basketball, joined legends like Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Damian Lillard, who balanced music with basketball. Her music career notably started at the age of 13 when she appeared on the third season of Queen Latifah's and Jermaine Dupri's "The Rap Game."
She went on to feature in Season 13 of "America's Got Talent" and performed her original song, "Guns Down," about her dad's death due to gun violence. Johnson reached the quarterfinals of the show and even earned a golden buzzer after performing another original song, "Letdown."
Although she was eliminated before the semis, Johnson has gone on to make a name for herself in music and has a massive following on social media. Johnson has over 240,000 subscribers on YouTube. Her hit song, "Came Out A Beast" featuring Lil Wayne, has about 2.5 million views.
