Former Iowa Hawkeyes guard Kate Martin is in the middle of a summer break from her WNBA duties. She is back in Iowa, enjoying her time off and even made an appearance on former teammate Jada Gyamfi's podcast, 'Fresh Tawk'.
As the two players discussed their time playing together and now apart, they also talked about some of the falls they have had on the court. Kate Martin recalled a particular incident from her time playing basketball for Edwardsville High School and she said:
"I was having the best game of my career, it was like my sophomore year or something. I was just shooting it, lights out. I had 29 points and also at halftime, I fell and ate it.
"Half-court, sprinting like my life was dependent on it and I was trying to catch up to someone. Bang. Somebody just barely nicks the back of my shoe, hit the back of my cap, fall. I had scrapes on both knees, both elbows, my freaking forehead. I just hit every part of my body."
She also talked about the after-effects of the fall, specifically in the newspapers.
"In the headline in the newspaper after the game was, 'Martin career-high and a faceplant'. I'm like, why would you guys put that in there? Like why would you do me like that?"
Kate Martin was not able to play for college right after high school as she sustained an ACL tear during the summer before her freshman season. After a year's break, Martin made her debut and played five years with the Hawkeyes, leading them to two back-to-back championship game appearances.
Kate Martin's injury saga continues in the WNBA
On July 17, at the last game before the break, the Las Vegas Aces took on the Chicago Sky. Kate Martin sustained a leg injury. Fortunately, it was not a serious one. With the break, the rookie guard had the opportunity to rest and recuperate well.
She is now back in practice, as the Aces shared footage of her training with Alysha Clark. In 22 games this season, Martin has averaged 3.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists. She plays a largely restricted role coming off the bench and averages 14.3 minutes per contest.
Martin and the Las Vegas Aces will return to action on August 17 as they take on New York Liberty.
