Flau'jae Johnson and the rest of the LSU Tigers are looking to finish strong in 2024 with a win against Albany on Sunday. They are coming off a lopsided 91-73 victory over the UIC Flames in their last game, where Johnson dropped 23 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
With her successful production in the 2024 campaign, the junior guard is giving all of the credit to her mother, Kia Brooks. Johnson sat down with "VSG Entertainment" on Thursday and said:
"My mom believed in this whole thing before I believed in it. She believed in me before I believed in myself. I always tell people my mom is the smartest (and) strongest woman I know.
"I was able to believe that because I just look at my mom like a goddess. The ground she walks on, I just think, 'Praise it.'" (0:04)
Given how her collegiate career has played out, Flau'jae Johnson has seemingly been inspired by Brooks the whole way. The Savannah, Georgia native was an integral part of the 2023 LSU Tigers squad that took home the National Championship trophy and has been a key cog for coach Kim Mulkey ever since.
Now in her third collegiate campaign, Johnson is posting up a career-best 20.9 points, 6.0 boards and 3.1 assists per contest, which has spearheaded LSU's unbeaten 14-0 effort thus far.
Flau'jae Johnson believes that all you need is a mother's belief
Later in the interview, Johnson reiterated her point regarding Brooks' belief in her. The 5-foot-10 star shared that all she ever needed was her mother's confidence to succeed:
"When your momma believe in you, nobody gotta believe in you. It doesn't matter what anybody in the world say. Once your mom tells you that she believes in you and that you can do it, I knew I could do it cause my momma told me." (0:25)
Hopefully, Flau'jae Johnson's mother can stay as an inspiration for the 21-year-old as she looks ahead to a promising WNBA career once she graduates from LSU.
