"I’ll pick that back up on ‘Winning Monday;": Dawn Staley eager to don Kelly green after Philadelphia Eagles win in NFC East championship game

South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley has claimed that she will put on the Kelly green jersey when the Philadelphia Eagles win in the NFC East championship game on Monday.

On Friday, Staley's team defeated the LSU Tigers 66-56, winning two quarters, drawing one, and losing one (21-22, 12-8, 18-11, 15-15). After the game, as per ON3, she was asked why she didn't wear her Eagles gear.

“I’ll pick that back up on 'Winning Monday,'” Staley responded.

The Eagles will face the Washington Commanders on Sunday in the NFC Championship, with a spot in Super Bowl LIX at stake.

Staley hopes to wear the Eagles' midnight or Kelly green gear if they win and make it to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. Staley is a proud Philadelphia fan and she has never been shy about showing her love for her hometown teams across all sports.

Dawn Staley credits South Carolina crowd as Gamecocks record significant win over LSU

Dawn Staley joined the Gamecocks in 2008 and has over 600 wins in 786 games, with 534 at South Carolina. She led her team to a perfect 38-0 record in 2024, capturing their third national championship and earning her fourth Naismith Coach of the Year Award.

This season, her team has maintained their winning momentum and by defeating LSU they improved their record to 21-1. This victory was significant, as it handed the 21-win Tigers their first loss of the season and put South Carolina first in the SEC.

Staley spoke to reporters after the game:

“I actually didn’t know what team was gonna show up. Sometimes the cadence of not playing your normal Thursday/Sunday, having it delayed until Friday, it messes with you a little bit.

"We had one extra day that I really didn’t want because we were amped up to play on Thursday. But this crowd showed up. This crowd poured into our team and we fed off the energy in this building. And I think it was great for women’s basketball.”

On Tuesday, Dawn Staley's South Carolina Gamecocks will take on the Tennessee Volunteers, who are currently ranked 10th in the table. Meanwhile, LSU is gearing up for its next challenge. They will face off against the Texas A&M Aggies, who currently hold the ninth spot in the SEC.

It looks set to continue being an exciting season with both teams looking like contenders for the national championship.
