Flau'jae Johnson has developed a strong mindset in her journey to becoming one of the top players in women's college basketball. In the latest episode of her podcast, "Best of Both Worlds," the LSU guard shared some aspects of that mindset with high school prospect Eli Ellis, one of the top performers in the ongoing Overtime Elite basketball league.
Ellis, who represents the YNG Dreamerz in the league, has averaged 33.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.9 assists, and dropped 55 points in the Dreamerz's previous game against RWE. Despite that, he does not feature in ESPN's Top 100 prospects in the Class of 2025, stating his displeasure with that fact while conversing with Johnson.
"I literally made a thing called the hit list of all the people that I beat in the Top 100," said Ellis. "ESPN, for some reason, will not rank me. There's like, 10 guys in OTE right now that are in the Top 100 that I'm not in, ESPN, and I, respectfully, killed and destroyed every single team in OTE so far."
Flau'jae Johnson made her feelings clear about Ellis' omission from the list, and explained how she used such lists as motivation to prove people wrong during her journey to the top.
"When I was unranked, I ain't gonna lie, I used that as so much motivation," said Johnson. "Everybody who was above me, I put it on the list and I'm like, 'I'm going to kill everybody.' I love lists. I love when they leave me off lists, I love when I'm super low, I love when I'm not on there. As a competitor, I get mad at the people on the list and they ain't even make the list."
On November 15, 2023, Ellis committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks for the 2025-26 season. Should the point guard bring his form from the Overtime Elite to college basketball, he could be one of the Gamecocks' top signees next season.
Flawless Flau'jae Johnson powers LSU to unbeaten start in 11 games
Flau'jae Johnson has been a key figure in the Tigers' starting five for the 2024-25 season, playing her role to perfection in their opening 11 games of the season. Across those games, she has averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.0 blocks, impressing on both ends of the court.
LSU's unbeaten 11-0 start to the season moved them up to fourth in the latest update of the AP Top 25, and they will be keen to maintain their perfect start in their next game against UL-Lafayette, which will take place at Baton Rouge on December 15 at 3:00PM ET.
