Kate Martin spent five years playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes and began pursuing a professional career in the WNBA with the Las Vegas Aces this year. After living close to her family for 24 years, Martin is now experiencing adulthood alone.
During an appearance on her former Iowa teammate Jada Gyamfi's podcast, "Fresh Tawk," Martin shared some of the nitty-gritty details of adulting, like buying contact lenses:
"I have contacts [and at] Iowa, like college, they pay for all of that. Now I have to buy contacts and like I have insurance. I literally have my own insurance and stuff through the WNBA. But it's not full coverage like it's normal, like job insurance."
Gyamfi was shocked to hear that insurance is not full coverage. When she asked Martin more about it, the guard said:
"I have no idea what I'm saying right now, but just know that I have insurance, and for my contacts, it's not full coverage, so I have to pay some to see every day. It's not like the office lady at Carver-Hawkeye Arena is ordering my contact, and I have a six-month supply.
"No, it's like I have to call the doctor myself and be like, 'Hey, I need new contacts' and they're going to send it and then I have to pay them money. Yeah, like that's adulting." (Time stamp: 12:01)
Kate Martin was shocked by her popularity in the WNBA
Martin's selection into the WNBA and the Las Vegas Aces roster surprised many. During her time at Iowa, she averaged 8.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists. These numbers don't normally lead to a professional career. However, Martin was drafted solely for her experience of bringing in results.
“They said, ‘You were drafted here for a reason. You don’t have to be anybody else, you don’t have to show out.’ They said, ‘Control the controllables. Attitude and effort, every day,’” Martin said in an interview in May with The Gazette.
With her limited role, Kate Martin said that she was shocked by the number of fans she had in the league, as evidenced by the fact that her jersey sold out just four games into the regular season.
"I honestly did not expect to have any fans when I came here," Martin said. "I had no expectations in that sort of way and I think fans liked that. I don't really get it, honestly. At the end of the day, I don't get it, but I feel super grateful for it."
Kate Martin is enjoying a month-long break from the WNBA but will return to action against the New York Liberty on August 16.
