Geno Auriemma has led the UConn Huskies women's program for 40 years. From Sue Bird to Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart, Auriemma has coached some of the best players.

Over the years, Auriemma has earned the reputation of preparing league-ready players through some tough approaches. In May 2020, during a Q&A session on Instagram Live with Chloe Pavlech, the Hall of Famer spoke about changes he has brought in his coaching style.

"It’s very difficult to do today what you were able to do in 2002, 3, 4," Auriemma said. "To me, I’ve toned it down a lot. I very rarely raise my voice at my practice. When I do get pissed and raise my voice, trust me, it’s a lot."

Geno Auriemma led UConn women's basketball to 11 NCAA titles. In the interview, he credited his staff's strict recruiting as the foundation for championship-winning rosters.

“When you’re recruiting, you’ve got to get kids that are willing to be disciplined, be committed, and they’re going to do what you want them to do," Auriemma said. "And they’re going to be willing to give up some of themselves, be teammates.
"If you want to build a championship program, then you’ve got to get those kinds of kids. If you just want to have a great team one year or a couple years, then you can ... take shortcuts, do whatever you want, boom. And if you want to have a great program, a championship program, then you’ve got to lay those foundations.”

Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey to be honored for 40-seasons together

For the last 40 years, coach Chris Dailey has been helping Geno Auriemma. As they set to appear in their 40th season together, the school has announced special activities to honor their legacy at Storrs.

The first celebration will be during the Huskies' game against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 20. Auriemma and Dailey's former players will be invited back to the campus. Additional promotions and giveaways will be released throughout the season.

The UConn Huskies are set to play their strongest roster in recent years in an attempt to bring the NCAA championship back to Storrs.
