Stanford guard Jaylen Blakes made the game-winning shot in the Cardinal's 72-71 victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday. The former Duke player spent three seasons in Durham before transferring to the Cardinal.
Despite moving, it looks like Blakes' animosity toward Duke's rival, UNC, has not changed. During the postgame presser, he was asked about the final shot and he said:
"I would be lying to you if I didn't think about having this moment the night before the game. You know, I was in my hotel room thinking about Austin Rivers' shot (in 2012), and I was thinking I would have a moment like that. Coach (Kyle Smith) trusted me and my teammates trusted me to have the ball at the end of the game like that," Jaylen Blakes said.
"You know, it's a big win for Stanford. Going into the ACC, beating one of the most historic teams in the country, not just in the ACC, but the country, your first year in the ACC, it was a special moment. ... You know, I still have Duke blood in me. So, it's still GTHC (Go To Hell, Carolina)."
Blakes finished with 20 points, four rebounds, and a team-high seven assists in the win, which snapped UNC's four-game win streak.
Stanford coach on recruiting Jaylen Blakes from Duke
During his time with the Blue Devils, Jaylen Blakes saw very little time on the court. He averaged 4.5 minutes as a freshman, 13.6 minutes as a sophomore, and 9.2 in his junior year. He had 2.2 ppg, 1.0 rpg and 0.8 apg during his Duke career.
With the arrival of Cooper Flagg and the other top recruits, it was evident that Blakes would continue to receive limited minutes on the court. He entered the transfer portal in April.
Cardinal coach Kyle Smith shared the recruiting process during the ACC media day, saying:
"Truthfully it was random. Our athletic director's wife, their daughter plays volleyball at Duke. She said Jaylen was a really good guy and he was available. I said, my staff hasn't put me on it, so I took it from there. I have to give full credit to Liz Muir, Bernard Muir's -- I surely did.
"I took it from there, and he made a lot of sense being a Duke guy, Blair Academy, my kind of guy. When we did our Zoom, just giving our pitch, I could tell I think he kind of would be invested in the way we do things. It's been a great match thus far."
At Stanford, Jaylen Blakes is playing 32.3 minutes per game and is averaging 14.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists this season.
