Bronny James was selected No. 55 by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft on Thursday. With this, he is likely to join his father, LeBron James, as the only father-son duo to share an NBA court.
Bronny's excited younger brother, Bryce, took to his Instagram to share a peek into the moment when Bronny was drafted along with some throwback pictures. One of them included the two brothers and their father with coach David Lane.
"Take this in .... my guys are teammates!!! So dope!! Happy for you guys!! Bron its only right that you play till Bryce gets there now," the coach wrote.
Bronny and Bryce James played together for one year at Sierra Canyon. While the elder James brother could start playing in the NBA in the fall, Bryce will have to wait till 2026 to be eligible for the draft.
In his lone season as a freshman with the USC Trojans, Brony James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. His younger brother Bryce is an incoming senior in high school at Sierra Canyon and has received two college offers: Ohio State and Duquesne.
Lakers GM explains why the team picked Bronny James
In the months leading up to the draft, many pundits questioned the legitimacy of Bronny James joining the NBA when he did not perform the best in college. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka defended their choice to draft him, saying:
"Bronny is, first and foremost, a person of high character. And second, he is a young man that works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental corps at the Lakers."
"I think he's going to be a point-of-attack defender that can really be disruptive with the way he guards other teams' point guards," Pelinka said. "I think he can guard multiple positions. And we've really seen growth in shooting. ... We really think he can turn into being an elite shotmaker. Just a 3-and-D player, for sure."
While Bronny James has the potential to grow into the type of player Pelinka is describing, it could be some time before he develops his skills. As such, he is unlikely to see much playing time as a rookie.
Newly hired Lakers coach JJ Redick will have to oversee the development of the Lakers' newly drafted players, as well as Armel Traore and Blake Hinson, who are on two-way deals.
