Amid the fiery workout sessions with his new teammates, Duke's Tyrese Proctor and coach Jon Scheyer took some time to support the Durham Bulls, a minor league baseball team. The Duke basketball X account shared pictures from the day.
"✌️@TyreseProctorx@DurhamBulls🐂😈," the caption read with a photo of Proctor throwing up the peace sign.
Coach Scheyer was joined by his wife Marcelle and kids, daughter Noa and sons Jett and James.
Tyrese Proctor had a disappointing sophomore season as he sustained an ankle injury. He was sidelined for four weeks in December and has had limited production since returning. Proctor averaged 10.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season. He shot 42.3 percent from the floor and 35.2 percent from the 3-point line.
Tyrese Proctor has made the best use of the offseason with a healthy return to Durham for the practice sessions. In an interview in May, coach Jon Scheyer mentioned that getting Proctor to health was the goal as he is one of the two returning players from last season. The other is Caleb Foster.
“We need to get him back to full health, full strength where he can work the way that he has worked in his time here,” Scheyer said (via The News & Observer). “I think that what he wasn’t able to do that as much down the stretch. So, for him, there aren’t any excuses. There isn’t any finger-pointing. It’s about doubling down on who he is and who he can be as a player and putting the work in. I’m proud of what he’s done so far.”
Coach Jon Scheyer on the transfer portal and welcoming the new freshman class
Following Duke's Elite Eight loss to NC State, a transfer portal exodus ensued. Senior players like Jeremy Roach and others chose to leave Durham. It was rumored that this move was related to No. 1 recruit Cooper Flagg joining next season.
“I have nothing but great things to say about all those guys," coach Jon Scheyer said (via Yahoo Sports). "Whatever direction they’re going, I was fortunate to coach really good guys. But our program needed to go to another level this year with the competitiveness and also the fit of the guys that we had.”
“We knew we had to have some change happen to take that next step for where we want to go,” he added. “We’ve executed that. … I’m really proud with where we’ve landed.”
Wearing the Blue and White for the upcoming season are transfer portal additions Maliq Brown, Mason Gillis, Sion James and Cameron Sheffield, along with six players from the 2024 recruiting class.
"I'm very proud of this group. There's great versatility, and each and every one of them brings a high level of competitiveness and toughness to our program," Jon Scheyer said of the incoming freshman class (via The Fayetteville Observer).
