Former Iowa athletes Kate Martin and Monika Czinano have been close friends for a long time. In June, Czinano went to a WNBA game between the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty to cheer on Martin.
After the game, the two hit an arcade in Las Vegas, and an Instagram handle posted photos of them bonding in Sin City. One picture showed Martin and Czinano seated at an arcade game machine playing "Ultimate Fire Link" on a vibrant casino floor.
Another picture captured the former teammates posing with a $0.15 cashout voucher. They also played a game titled 'Top Golf,' with the final leaderboard showing Kate Martin securing the second spot with 115,380 points, while Monika Czinano finished at the bottom with 77,910 points. Martin and Czinano played together at Iowa for four seasons. Although both joined the Hawkeyes in 2018, Martin missed an entire freshman year due to injury. Together they won two Big Ten tournament titles and were finalists in the 2023 NCAA tournament with the Hawkeyes.
In the 2023 WNBA draft, the Los Angeles Sparks selected Czinano with the 26th overall pick. However, after a few preseason games, the Sparks waived her. Czinano currently plays for the Hungarian team TFSE-MTK. Last season she averaged 14.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in the Hungary A Division league.
Kate Martin appreciates tremendous fan support
Earlier this week, before Kate Martin's second clash with her Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark, she spoke with the media about the support she receives from fans.
"I feel really grateful to be in the position I'm in. I honestly did not expect to have any fans when I came here," Martin said. "I had no expectations in that sort of way and I think fans liked that. I don't know.
"I don't really get it, honestly. If I'm being honest, at the end of the day, I don't get it. But I feel super grateful for it. It gives me a little bit of confidence. It makes me feel good when I hear the fans cheer for me when I'm checking in. So, I really appreciate that."
Martin was the 18th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Aces. She made her WNBA debut on May 18, 2024, in an 89-82 home victory against the Los Angeles Sparks. So far, she has appeared in 18 games and started one, averaging 3.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
