Dan Hurley, Alex Karaban and Aidan Mahaney have been key figures in the recent history of UConn men's basketball program. Karaban and Mahaney have emerged as two of the most reliable players in Hurley's roster, playing their roles to perfection in the Huskies' run to back-to-back national championships in the last two seasons.
Over the last two weeks, the trio achieved impressive feats, etching their names in program history. Karaban and Mahaney surpassed 1,000 career points as Huskies, while Hurley scored his 300th Division I win as a head coach. Ahead of UConn's game against Xavier on December 18, they were honored by the program for their respective milestones with special gestures.
Dan Hurley handed out special basketballs to Karaban and Mahaney to commemorate their achievement, while UConn's athletic director, David Benedict, honored Hurley by presenting him a basketball to commemorate his achievement.
Mahaney scored his 1,000th career point with a three-pointer in the first half during UConn's game against former No. 15 Baylor on December 4, a game which they won 76-72 to ensure they stayed unbeaten against the Bears.
Just four days later, Karaban followed by becoming the 53rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points, which he achieved by making a three-pointer in the first half during UConn's game with Texas.
He was influential on his return to the court after missing their previous two games, recording his first career double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds along with four assists, two blocks and two steals to power the Huskies to a 76-65 win on the road.
Dan Hurley secures 300th career win in dramatic fashion
Dan Hurley's moment came on December 14, when No. 18 UConn faced their toughest test of the season yet in No. 8 Gonzaga. Their horrendous showing in the Maui Invitational left college basketball fans wondering whether there were chinks in the Huskies' impregnable armor heading into the showdown at Madison Square Garden.
However, the reigning national champions showed that their horror run in Hawaii was well in the past, scoring a 77-71 win to hand Hurley his 300th Division I win as head coach. That result was a key factor in the resurgent Huskies gaining seven places to 11th in the latest update of the AP Top 25.
The Huskies scored a tight 94-89 win in their Big East opener against the Xavier Musketeers this Wednesday, marking the first time they won a conference opener at home in over two decades.
