Iowa women's basketball head coach Jan Jensen's wife, Julie Fitzpatrick, shared Instagram snaps of herself celebrating Christmas holidays with WNBA star Kate Martin and her family.
Fitzpatrick shared the heartwarming photos to celebrate her late mother, Beth Kelly Fitzpatrick Peters, fondly called Grandma Sunshine's posthumous birthday.
"It’s Sunshine’s Birthday today and the best way for us to honor her is to be together. Grateful for the family and the love she gave us. While we miss her everyday, she continues to shine so brightly in our lives. ❤️☀️❤️," the physical therapist captioned the post.
Grandma Sunshine died on May 2, 2015, at her residence following a brief battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She was survived by six children, including Julie Fitzpatrick, and 12 grandchildren, including the former Iowa star Kate Martin.
Jan Jensen discusses Iowa's erratic win over Purdue
No. 24 Iowa women's basketball team picked up a comfortable 84-63 win over Purdue on Sunday. While the win was expected, the game exposed the Iowa team as an unfinished product.
Coach Jan Jensen met with the media after the victory and discussed her team's inconsistency which allowed the Boilermakers to continuously pose a threat for most of the game.
"I think when we had the lulls, we shot quickly, we had turnovers, and we didn’t stay true to what we typically do,” said Jensen (1:36). “I tend to focus on the positive. We had the lulls, but this particular time, we stayed gritty, and we righted the ship.”
However, the Hawkeyes' play against the Boilermakers was headlined by some great nights from the freshmen, particularly Taylor Stremlow, Aaliyah Guyton and Ava Heiden. Stremlow and Guyton posted nine points each, while Heiden finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
“Some of our freshmen had some amazing moments today and it’s so fun to see those flashes,” Jensen added. “That’s why they were a pretty highly decorated class.”
The Hawkeyes were 34 of 62 (54.8%) from the floor and 8 of 24 (33.3%) from 3-point range. Senior guard Addi O’Grady led Iowa with 12 points, while Syd Affolter added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Hannah Stuelke finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Lucy Olsen scored six points, added six assists and one rebound in 22 minutes of play. But the the Hawkeyes freshmen stole the spotlight, with a combined 35 points and 17 rebounds.
Next, Iowa travels to State College for a matchup with the Penn State Lady Lions on New Year’s Day.
