Led by the Cavinder twins, the Miami Hurricanes emerged victorious against the Oregon State Beavers in the Maui Classic finale, securing a hard-fought 61-56 win. The Beavers dropped to 4-8 with the loss, concluding their non-conference play. Meanwhile, Miami strengthened its season record to 11-1, building an impressive start under first-year head coach Tricia Cullop.
Haley Cavinder delivered another stellar performance, achieving her third consecutive double-double with 12 rebounds and leading the team with five assists. The Cavinder twins took to Instagram after the game to share their excitement, posting a series of photos celebrating the win.
Among the set of pictures was one of Hanna Cavinder hugging her father, which drew attention from their fans. The post also featured snapshots of their time on the court, the sisters flaunting their jersey numbers. Lastly, there is a video capturing the tropical vibe of the Maui Classic.
Haley's performance throughout the tournament earned her the title of MVP, with averages of 22.5 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. On the other hand, Cameron Williams combined to score 41 of Miami’s total points. Williams also shined, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team after averaging 17.5 points and six rebounds on an efficient 53.6% shooting.
Besides the Cavinder twins' post, the team propels towards victory
Despite their win, Miami struggled offensively during the first half, particularly in the second quarter. After an early three-pointer from Natalija Marshall, the Hurricanes went ice-cold, missing their next 15 attempts. They finished the game shooting a dismal 1-for-16 from three-point range, which left them trailing 31-27 at halftime.
However, Miami’s defense stepped up when it mattered most. The Hurricanes locked down Oregon State’s offense in the third quarter, limiting the Beavers to just six points on 2-of-11 shooting.
In the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes led by 10 points with under three minutes remaining. Oregon State attempted a late rally, cutting the deficit to three points in the closing seconds. However, Haley Cavinder sealed the win with two crucial free throws, ending the Beavers' comeback hopes. Miami’s defensive intensity proved decisive, holding Oregon State to just 35.2% shooting from the field and 19.2% from beyond the arc.
The Hurricanes now prepare for a pivotal matchup against the 19th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. This game is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 29, at 4:00 PM ET at the Watsco Center.
