Dawn Staley has high praise for Raven Johnson

Raven Johnson has emerged as one of South Carolina’s vocal leaders. Her dedication and work ethic remain as strong as ever, and coach Dawn Staley has always recognized her determination and commitment.

"Raven just wants to win, that’s it," Staley said during a postgame conference. "She’s all about winning, and she’s won state championships. She came here to South Carolina and said, 'I’m coming to win championships.'"

Staley also pointed out that Raven isn’t focused on personal statistics.

"Although not having great stats probably wouldn’t put her in the position of being drafted high in the WNBA draft," Staley admitted.

Raven’s priorities are clear — she’s more concerned about team success than individual accolades. While her coach worries this could affect her draft stock, its that same team-first mindset that could set her apart in the professional league.

Raven’s skills go beyond the numbers. She’s a tough defender who thrives on turning defense into offense. Staley praised her versatility and contribution to the team.

"She can go in and do what she’s doing right now and not skip a beat because she defends, she rebounds, she communicates," Staley said. "She could be the fifth option in an offense and still be okay with her contributions at the end of the day. She’s a winner."

Even though her stats—averaging 5.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists—might not stand out, Raven Johnson's impact is undeniable. For instance, in South Carolina’s recent 101-60 win over No. 13 Oklahoma, she recorded nine points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals. That's value.

Johnson proves that her leadership, defense, and team-first attitude are just as vital as any box score.
