Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans defeated the No. 12 North Carolina Tar Heels 94-91 to finish third in the Maui Invitational on Wednesday at Lahaina Civic Center. The game was close, with the Tar Heels staging a comeback that led to an overtime. But they ultimately fell short.
Izzo's daughter, Raquel, traveled to Maui with her husband, Matthew McDonald and their daughter, Isabelle, to support her father. On Friday, she shared photos on Instagram of their time in Maui together.
"Extra grateful and thankful this year! Izzy has grown so much and she is SO SMART! I feel like everyday she is doing something new and it is so much fun!" Raquel wrote.
"We had the most amazing time in Maui this past week bringing my Moana girl to life! A few awesome games and one great one to bring it home! We had a blast in the pool(on our favorite slide) in the ocean, feeding the fish, going on walks, playing in the sand, hanging out with tias and tios, making new friends and cheering on papa and the boys! This officially checks another state off her bucket list!🌺🌴🌊💚🤍🏀 ."
Raquel is one of Izzo's two children. She is a big Spartans fan and often shares Instagram posts of her dad's success.
Meanwhile, Izzo, who is MSU's all-time winningest coach, has led the Spartans to improve to 6-2 this season following their win against the Tar Heels.
Tom Izzo shares what he told MSU players in win vs North Carolina
Tom Izzo made it known that the Spartans deserved to win the Maui Invitational game against North Carolina. The Spartans entered the game as underdogs.
However, MSU players stepped up, with six of them scoring in double digits. Tre Holloman was the leading scorer with 19 points. As MSU looked poised to secure victory, North Carolina staged a comeback and forced the game to overtime.
Following the win, Izzo shared what he told his players during the Tar Heels' comeback.
“I told them in the huddle, we deserve to win this game,” Izzo said (via NCAA.com).
“We've outplayed them most of the game. We deserve to win. We made some mistakes, but we deserve to win. That was kind of the MO we said. We said we got to get it right back. So wipe the frown off your face and let's go. And for me, that's because I was upset the way we lost it. You know, we just made some dumb turnovers at the end, miss a free throw."
MSU will face the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Wednesday at home.
