Lucy Olsen led the Iowa Hawkeyes to an important 75-69 win over in-state rivals, Iowa State on Wednesday. The senior guard finished with 25 points and five assists. The victory came tough as the Hawkeyes were trailing for most of the third quarter.

Olsen's boyfriend, Grayson Herr, posted a congratulatory message for her on his Instagram story, writing:

"Lets go (Lucy Olsen)"

This game was Olsen's first time being a part of the Cy-Hawk rivalry and she said in a post-game interview that the home-court advantage helped.

"I think we came out tonight with a lot of energy and the crowd really helped with that," Olsen said. "It was so loud in there.
"We were just talking about how loud. (Affolter) was like 'We’re not switching the screens.' and I’m like. 'I can’t hear the screen being called. It was really fun. I’ve never been in anything like it.”

Lucy Olsen leads the team but Sydney Affolter takes the spotlight

Although Lucy Olsen led the team in scoring and assists, the star of the game was senior guard Sydney Affolter. After taking a back seat in the last three years due to the presence of the experienced senior class, Affolter is finally stepping out of their shadows and leaving a mark on the team.

The guard finished with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Iowa coach Jan Jensen spoke of Sydney Affolter's importance in Wednesday's game, saying:

"Syd is, in the best way, stubborn. Syd won't realize she was out six weeks. Syd just wanted to be, 'I'm back. I'm good. We're all good.' I think what we've kind of been seeing is she hadn't hit that rhythm.
"Tonight, Syd just really took it into her own hands there for a while and said 'OK I've got to make some plays.' So I think it's going to be huge for her. She really ignited us."

The Iowa Hawkeyes lost their first game of the season last week against Tennessee on Saturday and it looks like Affolter has learned her lesson.

"It's four quarters of basketball, and every quarter is different. We start 0-0 at the beginning. But I thought we just executed down the stretch, and that was really important," she said. "That's where we fell off in the Tennessee game. So I'm glad for future games, we can rely on that."

Up next, Lucy Olsen and her team face Michigan State on Saturday.
