The Iowa Hawkeyes opened the 2024-25 college basketball season with a flourish, trampling the NIU Huskies 91-73 on Wednesday at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Lucy Olsen top scored with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting for the Hawkeyes, who claimed their first win of the season.
Kylie Feuerbach had a great all-round night, tallying 14 points, nine, rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Freshman Teagan Mallegni also scored 14 points while Addison O'Grady added 12 and Taylor McCabe and Hannah Stuelke finished with 11 markers each.
The Hawkeyes pulled away in the second period, building an 11-point lead by the half, 45-34.
They extended their lead to 20 (72-52) and coasted along in the fourth period to help new coach Jan Jensen open her account with the win.
Brooke Stonebraker led the Huskies with 15 points and Alecia Doyle added 14.

Iowa and NIU were engaged in a low-scoring first quarter, as both teams were rusty from the start.
Northern Illinois even took a three-point lead as the Hawkeyes couldn't buy a basket until the 3:01 mark of the first period following a Teagan Mallegni twinner.
Mallegni's two-pointer kicked off a 7-0 run that gave Iowa a 15-11 edge until NIU cut it down to one, following a 3-pointer at the close of the first period.
A 23-5 outburst handed the Hawkeyes a 38-21 advantage. Northern Illinois trimmed it down to 11 after scoring five straight points.
In the third, Lucy Olsen finally made her presence felt, scoring eight points while providing dimes to Teagan Mallegni, Addison O'Grady and Taylor McCabe.
Her scoring outburst handed Iowa a 67-45 lead with 3:28 remaining. Mallegni increased the advantage to 25 (72-47) after burying a 3-pointer with 1:52 left off an assist by Feuerbach.
Iowa eased on the gas pedal in the fourth period, allowing Northern Illinois to reach 73 points, but it scored 19 in the quarter to end the game with 91.
The Hawkeyes shot 52.1% from the field, making 37 of 71 attempts. However, they only shot 31% from the 3-point line while their opponents were more accurate, making 46.2% of their attempts.
Iowa dominated the rebounding department 35-30, while leading the assists (22-15), steals (13-6) and blocks (7-1) stats. The Hawkeyes forced 25 turnovers which led to 27 points.
Iowa will next face Virginia Tech on Sunday while NIU locks horns with St. Thomas Minnesota on the same day.
